Due to the pandemic crisis of COVID-19, we saw many filmmakers taking the digital route in the last year. While the situations have turned better now, many producers are blocking the dates for the theatrical releases. Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor’s Roohi, which released in the last week, has managed to perform decently well at the ticket windows. John Abraham, who is currently gearing up for the release of Mumbai Saga, which is arriving this Friday, was too opting for a digital release but the lead actor ensured that the gangster-drama gets a theatrical release. Talking to Mid-Day, John said, When I heard there were talks with Amazon Prime, I had a chat with Bhushan [Kumar, producer] and Gupta [Sanjay Gupta, director]. The actor added that he knows that the film wont make as much money as movies did in 2019. All theatres across the country havent opened, but with this film, a few more will. After we announced this film, five more movies were announced [for theatrical run].” Also Read – Pathan, War 2, Tiger 3 and more casting coups which promise a double dhamaka at the box office
While films like Sadak 2, Laxmii, Coolie No 1 and Gulabo Sitabo, didn’t get good response on the digital platform, John too feels that the actor takes an OTT if he is not confident about his project. “Lets be honest, its a common industry notion that if an actor is not confident of a film, he dumps it on OTT. Almost 90 per cent of movies that opted for OTT release were bad. I am not saying this film is spectacular, but we are not worried about its failure. I wont use the pandemic as a crutch, said the Satyameva Jayate 2 star. Speaking about choosing films and characters, the actor asserted, I simply want to make the cinema I [believe in]. I am comfortable with my earnings, so money isnt a driving factor. People often ask me about my wish list of directors, but I have none. Anyone who works with me is important for me. I cant stand outside a big directors door and ask for work. Its not about ego, its about self respect.
