The PRO14 Rainbow Cup SA match between the Stormers and Lions, scheduled for Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, has been cancelled in line with Covid-19 protocols.
SA Rugby announced in a statement that the decision was taken on Friday after positive results from scheduled testing of the Lions squad.
“The decision was taken as part of prescribed precautions advised by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) to limit the risk of further infection in the rugby community,” the statement read.
As determined by the competition rules, the Stormers are awarded four log points because of the cancellation which moves them up to second spot in the standings on 17 points. They are now one point ahead of the Sharks, who host the log-leading Bulls in the title-decider in Durban on Saturday.
“The Lions have followed all protocols and taken all the appropriate steps,” SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux added.
“While the cancellation is unfortunate, their approach ensures that the risk of cancellation of their match against the British & Irish Lions in the Lions Series on 3 July is well managed.”
