South Africa has breached the coronavirus death toll by 58 000 and President Cyril Ramaphosa has imposed stricter lockdown regulations as infections rise.

• According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, 208 more Covid-19 related deaths were recorded in SA.
• There were also 8 436 new Covid-19 cases.
• President Cyril Ramaphosa put the country under a Level 3 lockdown.

The Covid-19 death toll breached the 58 000 mark in South Africa on Tuesday evening.
According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), 208 more deaths were recorded, increasing the number of fatalities to 58 087.
The NICD added that 8 436 Covid-19 infections were recorded in the preceding 24 hours and that there was a positivity rate of 17.8%.
The majority of new cases are from Gauteng, followed by the Western Cape, the North West, the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.

The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) met on Tuesday to discuss the Covid-19 situation in the country.
President Cyril Ramaphosa put the country under a Level 3 lockdown.
The new regulations include restrictions on alcohol sales, an earlier curfew of 22:00, and limited gatherings.
“The massive surge in new infections means that we must once again tighten restrictions on the movement of persons and gatherings. We need to enforce compliance more rigorously, and we need to take firmer action against those who do not adhere to the regulations,” Ramaphosa said on Tuesday night.
He also said the country had the capacity to vaccinate at least 150 000 people a day, and that there were plans to increase that to 250 000 a day.
