Charlize Theron says her “thoughts and love are with the people of South Africa”.
The actor tweeted her support on Thursday as unrest and looting continues across the country. What began as a protest against the imprisonment of former president, Jacob Zuma, has since been fuelled by anger over poverty and unemployment. The looting has also resulted in food insecurity across the country.
“This is such a painful time for our nation, w/ so many unable to access safety, employment, education, food, healthcare & vaccines,” The Old Guard actor, who grew up in Benoni before moving to Los Angeles to pursue acting, said. “But I’m heartened to see glimmers of hope as communities come together & support each other.”
She added in a second tweet: “Our country is extraordinary in so many ways – diverse, resourceful, proud, accomplished, and so incredibly strong. May we come out of this intensely challenging time to find peace and safety.”
