Australian Harry Garside has won Australia’s first medal in boxing in more than 30 years.
The 24-year-old from Melbourne took on Cuba’s Andy Cruz in the men’s lightweight boxing semi-final, hoping for a place in the gold medal fight.
Garside fought well but couldn’t match the two-time world champion, with all five judges handing the first two rounds to Cruz. 
“He’s just an exceptional athlete,” Garside told Channel Seven after the fight.
“I always wanted to fight him and see how I stack up against him. He was just too good tonight.
“I’ll go back to the drawing board, back to the gym and make sure I train harder.”
Despite the loss, Garside automatically collects a bronze medal, because boxing doesn’t hold a fight for third and fourth places.

Silver for Australia in women’s beach volleyball

There were high hopes for Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy, who had a great run throughout the tournament in Tokyo.
The pair were aiming for Australia’s first gold medal in the event since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
But the American team of April Ross and Alix Klineman were a class above, keeping a gap between themselves and the Australians for most of the match.
Ross and Klineman got the job done on their third match point in 43 minutes, 21-15, 21-16.
Earlier in the day, the Swiss team of Anouk Verge-Depre and Joana Heidrich claimed bronze with a straight-sets win over Latvia’s Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka.
Hannah Green into medal contention with one round left

Australia’s Hannah Green is right in the mix to win a medal after a four-under-par 67 in the third round of the women’s golf.
Green hit five birdies to move into equal third overall at 10 under par, while American Nelly Korda leads at 15 under. 
The fourth and final round is due to begin at the Kasumigaseki Country Club at 7:30am AEST on Saturday.
But weather has been a factor, and if the last round isn’t completed the final result reverts to the scores after play today, with Green currently in the bronze position.

Poland’s Dawid Tomala has won gold in the 50-kilometre race walk in tough conditions in Sapporo.
Ten walkers didn’t finish and two were disqualified in the hot and humid weather in Japan’s north.
Australia’s Rhydian Cowley was eighth, 1 minute, 53 seconds behind the winner in a personal best time of 3:52:01.
The race was hard to watch at times, with a number of walkers struggling with the heat.
The last competitor crossed the finish line more than an hour after the Polish gold medallist.
The wheelchair was waiting for Ecuador’s Claudio Paulino Villanueva Flores but he didn’t want it as he staggered to his coach, who consoled him.
GB takes bronze in hockey thriller
Great Britain has come from 3-2 down to run over the top of a brave Indian team in the women’s hockey bronze medal match.
India was on top in the closing stages but couldn’t find an equaliser. 
The Indians, who beat Australia 1-0 in the quarter-finals, were chasing their first medal in women’s hockey at the Olympics. 
US into gold medal match once again
You have to go back to 1992 to find the last time the US didn’t win gold in the women’s basketball at the Olympics.
The team is on track to keep that run going after a convincing win over Serbia in the semi-finals.
They will meet either Japan or France in Sunday’s gold medal match.
