The Department of Defence has confirmed that a man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with a fatal attack on Irish peacekeeping troops in Lebanon 40 years ago.
Mahmoud Bazzi was convicted of murdering Private Derek Smallhorne and Private John Barrett, and of attempting to murder their colleague Private John O’Mahony in April 1980.
Mahmoud Bazzi was deported from the US in 2015
The trial by Military Tribunal in Beirut has been ongoing since 2015 after Bazzi was deported from the US.
Private O’Mahony was shot and injured close to the Israeli border, while a short time after his two colleagues – Privates Smallhorne and Barrett – were abducted and shot dead.
Due to his advanced age, Bazzi’s sentence was reduced.
He has been in custody since January 2015.
