A 32-year-old woman has been killed when her car was struck at a level-crossing by an express train in Brisbane’s east.

  • The 32-year-old woman was the driver and the sole occupant of the car and died at the scene
  • In early 2019, an elderly woman was struck and killed by a train at the same crossing near Lindum station
  • A $40m upgrade is planned for Lindum Station, which includes lifts and a new footbridge

The woman’s car was struck by a train near the Lindum station on the Cleveland line about 1:45pm.
She was the driver and the sole occupant of the car and died at the scene.
Nobody on the train was injured.
Services are blocked in both directions.
Police said motorists should avoid the area near Lindum Train Station, with road closures impacting Lindum Road and North Road.
Police Inspector Carl Hahne told ABC Radio Brisbane it was a confronting scene.
“This train was an express train, so you can imagine the impact was quite catastrophic,” he said.
“Therefore we’ve got a large area of debris from the vehicle that we have to examine.

“We’re doing that as meticulously as possible, but we’re also aware that [there are] commuters on a Friday afternoon.
“This line’s a major train line, so we’re working very closely with Queensland Rail to get it cleared.”
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
Translink says trains on the Cleveland line are suspended between Murarrie and Cleveland stations and commuters should allow for delays of up to 60 minutes.
It said replacement rail buses are now operating between Murarrie and Manly stations and shuttle train services are running between Manly and Cleveland stations.

Queensland MP for Lytton, Joan Pease, tweeted her condolences to the woman’s family.
“My heart breaks for the young woman who died, and for her grieving family and friends,” she wrote.
“Any death on our roads is a tragedy,
“Like me, there are many in our community who have been shaken by what has happened today.
“Fixing the Lindum crossing is my number one priority and I will keep pushing to start work as soon as possible.”

In early 2019, an elderly woman was struck and killed by a train at the same crossing near Lindum station.
In October last year, Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey announced a $40 million upgrade for Lindum Station.
Mr Bailey said the project included lifts to be installed at the bayside commuter hub alongside a new footbridge, a park-and-ride expansion, bike parking and platform raising.
A spokesperson for Mr Bailey today said the Queensland government was “working the different levels of government on other solutions”.
“One of which is working with council, who will need to build new traffic lights at the nearby intersection to improve safety on the council-controlled road,” the spokesperson said.
